A Letter from the President
Dear Friend of NAMI,
For over 36 years, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Northern Illinois has been dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families living with mental illness through support, education, advocacy, and hope. Founded in 1984 by a group of families and individuals living with mental illness, we accomplish our mission in a number of ways – and all because of your generosity.
NAMI Northern Illinois raises awareness on mental illness through community events, health fairs and presentations. We advocate on behalf of individuals and families and teach them self-empowerment skills needed to advocate for themselves. We provide needed resource information by phone, email, in-person contacts and through social media to those seeking information on mental illness. We provide free monthly and weekly groups, programs, classes, seminars, and trainings to families and individuals affected by mental illness. We also provide continuing education credits to the critical workers who work with people in mental crisis. All because of you.
Why do we do it? You see, in 1984 our founders lived in a world frightened by a global disease, the sour politics of a national election, and uncertain economic conditions in their communities. But, they also had a motivation that most didn’t have; they had mental illness in their lives. The motivation was the unwavering compassion to help those closest to them who struggled to cope with the effects of mental illness. They inherently knew that their love, their compassion, was bigger than any obstacle in their way. By coming together, a small group of people started a premier mental health resource in this region that has lasted for four decades.
If that isn’t motivation enough, we know that 1 in 5 people in the U.S. will experience a diagnosable mental illness at some point in their lives. The pervasiveness of mental illness and the need for mental health services has outpaced service providers. That is why, through your support, NAMI Northern Illinois is filling gaps in much-needed programs, resources, and support for people in need.
Much like 1984, this year has been a dark one for many with mental illness. Please be the beacon of hope to light the way for those in need. None of the support offered happens without you. Please continue to help us help others in our expanding mission to help those affected by mental illness.
