My son was diagnosed with schizophrenia 10 years ago after several run-ins with law enforcement. He ended up in a psych unit for a couple weeks. Since then he has been on and off medication acknowledging his illness at times versus denying he is sick. Mostly he thinks it is all a government conspiracy against him. He can’t live on his own without a lot of help from me. I am all he has.
I found NAMI and this has helped so much. I learned about his disease process and how to support him. I get support from other family members in my monthly Support group meetings. Being involved in NAMI has allowed me to give back to others.
