Carol S Ahrens. Age: 70. Diagnosed with Major Depressive Disease about 20 years ago. I also have a grandmother who suffered from depression who ended up taking her own life when she was 70.
I probably have had depression most of my life but wasn’t diagnosed until about 20 years ago. I have been suicidal several times and hospitalized in a psych ward many times. I am now permanently disabled.
Medications have been my life saver. Also talk therapy. I have a case manager through our local Senior Resource center who helps me with getting the services I need such as home care.
While my children and grandchildren have pretty much written me off, I have found amazing support among my siblings, mom, friends and church. Our denomination has a mental health network which has been helpful and NAMI has also been a great help.
